The Beats were a group of poets and writers that established a new way of writing and a new type of cultural norm in the 1940s and 50s that foreshadowed the cultural earthquakes of the 1960s that are still with us today.

A trip of writers, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs were brought together by Lucien Carr, all young Columbia students who wanted to create a new style of writing in the post-war years. But until now one of their number, who had by her own desire been kept out of the spotlight is being rediscovered.

Alene Lee was an African-American woman who was a lover and life-long friend of Kerouac, her peer according to her daughter Christina Diamonte. Lee, who died of an aggressive form of lung cancer in 1991 had asked her daughter to make her story public, to keep her alive after death. Diamonte described what it was like for her mother as a Black-Native American to exist in a world where women and women of color were often undervalued even by relatively progressive men.
