Damage and waves in Serang in Banten province

(23 Dec 2018) Footage from Serang in Indonesia's Banten province showed widespread damage to a coastal community on Sunday, after a tsunami caused by the eruption of an island volcano killed more than 160 people. Sea waves remained high in Serang, and a few people were seen helping clear up debris near a beach. Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency said 168 deaths had been confirmed and at least 745 people were injured. At least 30 others were missing, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise because some areas have not yet been reached. The tsumani sent a wall of water crashing ashore and swept away people, houses and buildings. Scientists, including those from Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics agency, said the tsunami could have been caused by undersea landslides or those occurring above sea level on the volcano's steep outside slope following the eruption of Anak Krakatau.
