My beloved water cooler that I've had for the past 16 years gave out the other day, 16 years and 2 days since it was put into service.  I was more upset about it dying because a replacement just wouldn't be the same.  Water coolers today, if you even find one that uses a compressor, just aren't as cold as this one.  They're just not the same.  The blue on this one is sort of that opaque, "Apple-esque" Bondi Blue used on the original iMac, since that was in style at the time.  Turns out blue goes with my kitchen, another reason why this would be a shame to have to get rid of.

There is no capacitor used to start this tiny compressor.  Instead, they use a device called a start relay.  I removed it, and shook it, and it was rattling--a sure sign it has failed.  The wif and I guessed that if the water cooler turns on 20 times a day, it has started the compressor over 116,000 times.  A very good life.

I searched around, and found a replacement start relay, despite the fact that the company that made this water cooler has long since gone out of business.  It came in 4 days.  The replacement was twice as easy to install as the old one was to remove.

In the video is the moment of truth, I had not tested it before, so that indeed was the first start since it failed.  It started beautifully, just like it always had!  And that's a very wonderful thing, as I can now enjoy cold water again.  They say to always drink 8 glasses of water a day.  I usually drink half a gallon myself.  It's very important to stay hydrated.  If I'm not drinking water, I'm replacing it with beer--again--very important to stay hydrated!
