I don’t care if it’s perfect. I’d rather it be sloppy and public than perfect and private. I’m not advocating poor music and laziness. I’m fighting against the tendency to make everything perfect. I don’t want to create perfect music, I want to create good music. More than that, I believe perfection sometimes comes at the expense of authenticity. I want my music to reflect who I am, flaws and all. That’s why I don’t use AutoTune. That’s why I don’t do much “pocketing” or editing. That’s why I tend to use a minimalist approach to mixing. I even apply this to Home Studio Corner stuff. Early last week I wanted to record a podcast episode, so I decided to stream the whole thing while I recorded it. One guy saw the stream and went off on me about how unprepared and unprofessional I was. How I was losing fans and business because my stuff wasn’t polished and perfect. He said I was sloppy. I thought to myself, “Exactly!!! Thank you!” I’d rather be ME and have a smaller audience/business than be someone I’m not. I’m not polished. I’m not perfect. I have major flaws. So does my music. I’m always trying to improve and be better, but I’m NOT aiming for perfection. It’s not possible, and it’s a dangerous road to go down. With that said, I’d love for you to check out my latest episode of the podcast, the aforementioned sloppy episode. It was a fun one, I talked about everything from being cautious about “gurus” to all sorts of recording, production, and mixing advice.
