The Montgomery College-Smithsonian Faculty Fellowships are the product of a unique collaboration between the Paul Peck Humanities Institute and the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies.  The Fellowship offers Montgomery College faculty a dynamic, academically challenging learning community within which they develop skills for using objects, exhibits and museums in their teaching.  Students work on assignments and projects that require one or more visits to Smithsonian exhibits.  They leave the classroom—ride the Metro—and enter new worlds at the Smithsonian.  Their lives are changed by these experiences; they tell us so. 
Montgomery College is a public, open admissions community college with campuses in Germantown, Rockville, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring, plus workforce development/continuing education centers and off-site programs throughout Montgomery County, Maryland. The College serves more than 60,000 students a year, through both credit and noncredit programs, in more than 150 areas of study.

The Montgomery College-Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship was an exciting experience that allowed me to explore American Identity through jazz dance. The exhibit I was able to directly apply to the Jazz III course was "Written In Bone" at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. The 'entrance narrative' came from an examination of the exhibit's wonderful website that provided background information on anatomy and the field of Forensic Anthropology.   Clear descriptions of the exhibit, curators, contributors, and a map of the exhibit also prepared students for a successful visit.  In advance to the exhibit tour, students prepared questions for class.  However, before we could explore an exhibit that inspires them to look at themselves from within we started with an external examination of their individual identity.  "Who knew that my bones could be a starting point to identity and that even after we are gone we can still continue to teach through our bodies?" MC student.
