Man Crashes Into & Then Out Of Canal - Modesto, California News

This evening at around 8:45 p.m. the Modesto Police Department, Modesto Fire Department, and Ambulance Crews were dispatched to the canal on Briggsmore Ave. East of Roselle Ave. in Modesto, California for reports of a truck in the canal.

Crews were prepared for a water rescue situation however, when the arrived they found that the truck which had crashed into the canal was now on the banks of the other side with only the wheels caught on the edge. The canal had only inches of water in it at the time of the crash. The lone occupant of the vehicle, a man sustained only minor injuries.

The investigation is still in it's early stages however, tire track mark evidence is indicating that the driver was traveling eastbound on Briggsmore Ave. when he for some reason, crossed into oncoming traffic, then up the canal bank, then into the canal, and then back out of the canal on the other side.

No other vehicles, people, or property were involved in the collision.

The man told police that he fell asleep while driving however, police are continuing their investigation at the Hospital the man was transported to. At this point the Modesto Police Department has not yet released the results of that investigation. We will update this story if and when police release that information.

Update: The Modesto Police Department has officially determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in this crash. No charges of any kind were filed against the driver. A medical problem is now the leading theory in the cause of the crash.
