Sing and strum along with Jenny’s ukulele tutorial for “The Army Song,” also known as “The Caisson Song” complete with chords & lyrics on screen. “The Caisson Song” is a wonderful and patriotic song that’s great to learn on the ukulele for Veterans Day, Fourth of July or just for any day. You will need seven chords, but they’re pretty straightforward: C, G7, F, Am, D7, G and E7. These chords are shown by Jenny in the lesson video. The official U.S. Army Song entitled “The Army Goes Rolling Along” was based from “The Caisson Song,” sometimes also referred to as “The Caissons Go Rolling Along.” As a lieutenant of the 5th Field Artillery unit stationed in the Philippines in 1908, Edmund Gruber was inspired to write a song for the field artillery. While in gathering with his fellow lieutenants, Gruber started playing the melody and the group helped complete the lyrics for the song. The song gained popularity and became the anthem of all U.S. Field Artillery regiments. John Philip Sousa, at the bequest of Army officers, created a marching song in 1917 which was later entitled “The Field Artillery Song” based from Gruber’s “The Caisson Song”. “The Field Artillery Song” was a hit but there’s some controversy regarding royalties as Sousa appeared to not have been informed that the basis for his marching composition was made by Gruber. After many years of trying to find an official song, the U.S. Army finally modified the lyrics to Gruber’s original composition to encompass the whole U.S. Army (as opposed to only the artillery regiments).
