Tonight we focused on Smoothness. Moving with fluidity is a key principle of Tai Chi, but because we usually learn our forms one move at a time, there is a tendency to perform them one move at a time. Sigung Richard Clear explained that good Tai Chi never stops. The end of each move is the beginning of the next one. To break the habit of stop and start Tai Chi, it is best to work on the space between each move as if it was a move in itself. Spending time on these "transition" moves will not only smooth out your Tai Chi, the transitions often have hidden martial applications as well. The benefit of smooth, continuous motion can be clearly demonstrated with some simple Push Hands play. You can see Sigung Clear demonstrating this with his student, but you should also take a few moments to see for yourself with a partner.
