WH: 'We'll find ways' to get $5B for border wall

(17 Dec 2018) The White House said Monday President Donald Trump is continuing to negotiate with Congress over funding for the government as a Friday deadline for a resolution looms. Trump is insisting that Congress provide $5 billion to build a border wall despite lawmaker resistance from both parties. Without an agreement, parts of the federal government will shut down at midnight Friday. Speaking to reporters, Trump's director of strategic communications, Mercedes Schlapp, said funding the border wall remains the president's priority. Schlapp said, "Obviously we don't want to get to a point that we shut down the government but we've got to find increased funding for border security," adding, "We'll find ways to get there." Trump said last week he would be "proud" to have a shutdown to get Congress to approve a $5 billion down payment to fulfill his campaign promise. But the president doesn't have the votes from the Republican-controlled Congress to support funding for the wall at that level. Schlapp was also asked about Saudi Arabia's rejection of a Senate resolution last week that put the blame for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi squarely on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. She said the White House has "taken action" and will keep "close tabs on it."
