Source: https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-tqsn6-70049c We are seeing Navy ships have collisions at an alarming rate these days, one has to wonder what can be done to prevent this. The answer to this riddle is a low tech solution, many seem to have forgotten. The rate of a Signalman includes, just part of the next paragraph below. When not signaling, signalmen are on the alert for signals from other vessels and aircraft, all the while keeping a sharp lookout for enemy aircraft and ships. SMs must also know storm warnings, distress signals, emergency signals, and signals to lifeboats and aircraft. They Navy has removed this rating, and we feel very strongly that this rating is the missing link between collision and no collision. Listen to the podcast, and hear it from a Signalmans perspective.
