Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, donors from around the world gave more than $31 million toward Compassion’s Disaster Relief Fund for recovery efforts. Post-traumatic counseling has instilled Compassion-assisted children and their parents with a newfound hope and joy that the earthquake defeated, if not destroyed. Income-generation training and microfinance loans at an interest rate of 1% has given parents of Compassion beneficiaries the opportunity to provide for their families through small businesses like bakeries, water filtration stands, internet cafes and shoemaking. More than 450 small businesses and thousands of jobs have emerged from these loans.
