Shooting a shell along the right side gives you a long time to time your hit for this shortcut (used TAS to try different things, but this setup is intended for real-time speedruns).  I add a little jump to the spiral for the next lap just for fun.  I've never noticed the Star in the middle of the spiral following you before...
