As if determining the price to performance ratio of a TV wasn't hard enough, some manufacturers have started using a new rating system, quantum dots... Quantum dots are nano-sized particles (or crystals) made of semiconductor materials. Because they are photo-active, they give off light when they receive light. And when they do, the light they emit is a specific color (or wavelength) depending on the size of the core of the quantum dot. This allows displays with quantum dots show a wider range of colors more accurately.
