Since the first case of HIV/AIDS was detected in Kenya in 1984, the country has made strides in fighting the epidemic including rapid scale up of anti-retroviral treatment. In the process, the healthcare system has been strained due to limited resources. Homabay County is one of the most affected. Despite having the highest HIV burden in the country, it lacks a viral load testing machine. The machine, valued at Sh 15 million, determines the concentration of the virus in the blood and thus helps in monitoring and administering anti-retroviral treatment.
