Spotty cell service in Harvey disaster areas

Cell phone coverage has been bad in many areas hit hardest by Harvey. According to the FCC's website, on Tuesday 20 percent of cell sites were out of service in San Patricio County. 80 percent of cell sites were down in Aransas County. Wednesday, AT&T Wireless announced it would launch twenty-five drones to the skies to monitor the damage done to cell towers. Cell phone service is necessary for people like Sonia Longoria of Rockport to contact loved ones after the hurricane hit. "The service goes in and out," said Longoria. "If you catch it you better use it quick. It does work on and off though." For volunteers like Chris Odom who is handing out food, he wanted to call friends whose homes were damaged by Harvey. "Would have to drive back to Corpus just to talk back to Houston to tell them about their house," said Odom. Wireless companies have been doing their part during this emergency. Wednesday Verizon Wireless announced it would donate $10 million dollars to hurricane relief efforts. AT&T Wireless announced it was making donations, too, and waiving fees for customers impacted by Harvey. Sprint says it is donating at least $2.5 million-dollars to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
