This is a very sad and poignant tale from the time of the Potato Famine of 1848 in Ireland. The Irish farm tenants had to provide vegetables for their English landlords which left them only potatoes for their own staple diet. The potato crops became diseased with 'blight' which in turn left the tenants starving and unable to raise enough money for their rents and taxes. When this happened they were evicted by their cruel landlords and left to fend for themselves as best they could. Many thousands died! Some like the story teller of this song emigrated to America where they found a new and hopefully better life, but the memory of their injustice lived on and many of them or their descendants would return to Ireland to fight for her freedom.
