Galena (IL) is a beautiful, little hamlet along the Mississippi River. Part of Galena's claim to fame is being the former home of President and Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant.

I've enjoyed taking my family there to walk along Main Street and patronize the various shops. It's also one of my favorite places to preach in the open-air.

Main Street is narrow and lined with buildings. The acoustics are wonderful. Amplification is not allowed in Galena, but it's not needed, regardless of the strength of the preacher's voice. My favorite preaching spot on Main Street is at the corner with Diagonal Street.

Today my brother Ryan Peterson and I spent the afternoon in Galena.

A group of older gentlemen made their way up and down Main Street singing well-known Christmas carols. The people appreciated their talent. No one seemed to mind their public performances. The carolers didn't disrupt anyone's holiday cheer.

Ryan and I distributed gospel tracts and talked to people. I also open-air preached.

I had been preaching my first open-air message for a while, when two of Galena's finest stopped by to let us know they received some complaints about my preaching. The lead officer vaguely suggested that if they received more complaints about my preaching, I could face a charge of disorderly conduct.

I had preached about the incarnation. I had preached about the God-Man's birth, life, death, and resurrection. Sadly, it's Christmas-time. People are out enjoying the holiday season. They don't want to be disturbed by preaching about Jesus.

However, there were several people throughout the afternoon who stopped to encourage us, thanking us for being their and proclaiming the gospel.
