Malaysian fish farm owner Chan Sai Chuin returned home on a speedboat on Wednesday after more than 180 days in captivity after Filipino and Malaysian authorities secured his release. Chan Sai Chuin and his wife were woken by a dog barking and footsteps at around 12:40 a.m. on June 16. As they checked on the fish farm, Chan was held at gunpoint by two masked men, Chan was told to board a boat. His wife was too scared and returned to their room. Chan, along with a Filipino worker named Mazlan, were then abducted. At least two other gunmen helped coordinate the kidnapping. Mazlan reportedly jumped from the boat and swam towards a mangrove area to escape, although police never managed to trace him as he went into hiding as he did not have valid identification documents. Chan was taken to Jolo Island, the base of the Abu Sayyaf militants, where he was held captive for more than 180 days.
