It is widely believed that the origins of the dog were more than 17,000 years ago; Recent DNA tests and a closer fossil examination suggest that the dogs originated 150,000 years ago. However, the dating in relation to the Bible seems a bit far fetched.

We know they were present in the days of the Bible because it is mentioned in several passages. Scientists and researchers have devised several possible paths that the development of modern dogs has followed.

Dogs have lived and worked with humans in different roles throughout the ages. Even today people continually find new ways in which dogs can improve their lives, or perform useful services to people.

To understand dogs and their complex relationship with humans, we need to look back to the origins of the dog, or the species; and take a closer look at the habits of the wolves.

Wolves are very social animals; they live in herds and obtain not only guaranteed survival, but also relationships within the herd. We can see clearly the evidence of the social structure systems of the wolves, if we look at our own dogs today.

In a healthy relationship, the human is the alpha member of the pack. It is believed that a less socialized dog believes that he is the leader of his pack, instead of you, the owner. Today it is widely believed that domestication is occurring at a much greater speed than previously thought. It seems that dogs are now born with very appreciated traits.

Not only their temperaments, but also the way they look, are changing a lot. Scientists have had difficulty distinguishing fragments of bones and skulls. It is mainly differences in the skull and teeth that scientists can compare to determine if the samples are from wolves, or remains of dogs.

On a farm in Siberia, researchers have been experimenting with foxes and how quickly they can be tamed. They believe that this could lead to an understanding of how our own dogs have evolved.

Researchers around the world are also becoming interested in the cognitions of our dogs, and how our dogs have been accepted in our human social structures. The story can not trace the exact wolf routes, to dog.

Wolves are now on endangered lists around the world. Many brave efforts are being made to stop the steady decline in the number of wolves.

Is it all part of evolution?

Dogs have evolved slowly from wolves, and have found a home with humans. They have become an essential part of human life. If all the wolves had formed such relationships with humans, they too could have the security of a life without extinction.

It is much easier to imagine a world without wolves than to imagine a world without dogs.
