(Nellore is the name of a district of the former Madras Province, Andra State, located on the east coast of India). Origin: The Ongole or Nelore breed as it is known in Brazil. It is an Indian breed, brought by the Aryan tribes five thousand years before Christ, and the breed is the result of crossing the Ongole with more than 14 different breeds. In India, as it is not intended for meat production (for cultural and religious reasons), the Nellore has not undergone major improvements, being used more in heavy transport and in milk production. Nellore in Brazil: The breed arrived on the Brazilian coast in 1868, in Salvador/BA.
