Ben Fijal is a grade 9 student at Green School, Bali. Last year, he learned about the catastrophic fires in Borneo from the documentary ‘The Heart of Haze’ and felt like he should do something to help.

He wasn’t sure how until he went on a school trip to Borneo and met inspiring Dayak youth, doing great things there in education, activism and conservation. He also saw orangutans for real in their peatland forest home and met with local and international scientists helping to protect them. So, he was inspired to take action and together with his family, he came up with a plan to make difference.

Ben founded TRI Handkerchiefs and assigned as his middle school graduation project in June 2016. TRI uses handkerchiefs as a unique tool to inform the world about deforestation. 100% of net profits from this project empower grassroots organizations in Borneo and Sumatra that are working directly or indirectly to protect Indonesia's remaining forests, habitat to a growing number of critically endangered species, including orangutans. TRI aims to raise people awareness of deforestation by re-popularize the handkerchief both as a cool and attractive accessory and also as an invaluable multi-tool and alternative to single-usage products that every person should carry in their pocket. As material, TRI Handkerchiefs used up-cycled retired bed-sheets donated by hotels that also act as sponsors for the project.
