Tip Leads Police To Suspected Church Vandal

A Crime Stoppers report from KMBC helped police find a man suspected of driving his SUV through a metro-area church.

On a Sunday morning in February, the Rev. Mark Massey went to the Weston Community Church and found the building vandalized.

"I pulled up here and it was in the middle of one of those snowstorms we've had this year and I could barely see. And it looked like it looked like our front doors were open and I said, 'What in the world happened?'" Massey told KMBC's Marcus Moore. "Then I turned the lights on and saw a hole there, and I walked around and saw the third hole."

Police said Daniel Singleton, 28, of Rushville, drove his Jeep Cherokee through several church walls.

"He drove through the doors and actually came into the common area, up to the sanctuary doors," Massey said.

It left about $20,000 worth of damage to the building, but the congregation of 70 never missed a beat, the reverend said.

"It hasn't slowed us down a bit. What somebody meant for evil, God's going to use for good and He has done that," Massey said.

With mud splattered on windows and debris left nearby, the question of why has yet to be answered, but Massey is thankful for the tip that led to an arrest.

"In a way it's relief, but as I said before, I have no animosity towards the person who did this. We'll continue to pray for the person who did this and will continue to do that and offer forgiveness," Massey said.

The reverend said Singleton is not a member of the church and that he's never met him.
