Showrunner Blu-ray commentary explains why the roles of Missandei and Grey Worm were expanded in Game of Thrones, and given an invented romance subplot not in the books - as they are the only major recurring non-white characters from their fantasy world's analogue of Africa (Sothoryos, with Naath and the Summer Isles).
