Immigrants in court seeking waivers to travel ban

(13 Dec 2018) A group of immigrants and their families say the US government is not fulfilling its promise to allow those affected by the travel ban to appeal on a case-by-case basis. They filed a class action lawsuit in the District Court of Northern California in San Francisco. Thirty-six plaintiffs say the federal government has not considered their waiver cases to allow themselves or loved ones to travel to the US. When President Trump issued the latest version of the travel ban, he directed federal agencies to issue waivers for individuals when appropriate. However, many have been told their cases are not even being considered for a waiver. The waiver remains the only way people blocked under the ban can enter the US. Attorneys for the plaintiffs say families are being separated and people are being denied life-saving medical treatment. They say businesses are also being denied talented workers who seek to contribute to US society. The plaintiffs in the case come from Iran, Libya, Somali, Syria and Yemen, countries included in Trump's travel ban. The case if the first challenge to the ban since the Supreme Court's decision in June affirmed the legality of the policy.
