SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - Pako did what he was trained to do that night in June 2016.

He distracted a gunman who was pointing his weapon at police. The man shot Pako instead. Since then people from all over the country have sent get well cards and treats.

June 3, a chase ended up in Springfield Township. Stop sticks disabled Tyler Jones' car. He jumped out and ran, pointing a gun at cops. That's when Pako ran him down and bit him. Jones shot Pako who fell, got up and bit him again. Jones was shot by police but survived.

Pako's handler, Officer Jim Scheeler, said, "Absolutely saved my life and other officers lives he did his job distracted the suspect."

Three weeks later the wounds could barely be seen, "Right here where the bullet entered, followed two inches, exited here, ricocheted on the concrete and embedded in the stomach."

As of Tuesday, June 28, Pako had a vest donated by the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9's. People sent cards, dog food and treats to the police station from all over the country. It included a note from the daughter of an F.B.I. Agent killed on duty in 1979 when she was 7-years-old.

Chief Robert Browder said the public seems to understand Pako's place in the department, "Pako comes to work, comes into the building, he's part of the family. He's motivated. He's ready to work, willing to lay down his life like he did that night."

Anyone who sent treats or card with return address gets a personalized thank you from Pako. Pako will be awarded a medal of valor at the township trustees meeting in early August.
