Nobody in their right mind would even attempt to break through 1/4" ice (in a float tube/belly boat) to go crappie fishing, right? Correct! Nonetheless, In this late November, 2018 adventure, it happened in an ice-covered pond in Central Missouri. Apparently it is an age-old Viking tradition (ha ha ha) of fishing - not ON the ice, but IN the ice! Using my float tube as an ice breaker, a narrow, maybe 6 foot, 'lane' was cleared. The lane offered just enough space to access a submerged field of cedar trees. A Humminbird down imaging fish finder (mounted on a Fishfindermounts.com 5ah mounting system) was instrumental in precisely locating the submerged trees where fish were hanging out. A variety of small crappie jigs including the Meal Worm/Crappie Nibble, the Panfish Assassin and a Bobby Garland Baby Shad caught good crappie and bluegill. A nice big bass was also hooked but failed to hold on a 1/64th oz jig head. Some nice crappie, including several in the 12-13 inch range, made it on the stringer. The best lure was a 1/64th oz Leland's Lures Trout Magnet jig head adorned with an Uncle Josh's meal worm and a white Berkley power bait "crappie nibble." This was definitely a Viking Cruise you won't see on T.V.! Enjoy the show! Featured Products: fish finder mounting system - https://www.fishfindermounts.com/ Bobby Garland jigs, Panfish Assassin, Uncle Josh's Meal Worms, Trout Magnet jig heads, BnM jig heads were all purchased at Wal-Mart.
