I think that energy drinks are so prevalent in our society now, that they've become accepted. The truth is we need to recognize there's a difference between sports drinks and energy drinks. So, energy drinks may claim to cause increased energy, but it's usually not through calories, carbohydrates or electrolytes. It's usually through stimulants like caffeine or guarana, which both can have negative side affects for the growing body, even as adults as well. So in general, I would tell most children to stay away from energy drinks. They really don't help with the things that they would like them to help with, and they can be dangerous. Sports drinks on the other hand, for those young athletes who are trying to use them as electrolyte replacements, can have their place. But again, realize that for young children who are just using them as juice, basically they just add calories to the diet, and can contribute to obesity. So we need to be careful with all those types of drinks, but especially energy drinks.
