Are You Overcharged At Checkout Counters?

Economic times are tough. So you count every penny earned, every penny spent and every penny saved. But do you watch for mistakes at the store's checkout aisle? Do you ever glance at your receipt? KMBC's Maria Antonia reported that there are inspectors who do nothing but check prices at stores, and they find mistakes. Antibacterial wipes were priced at a local grocery store for $1.99. But when an inspector had it scanned, they came to $2.89 -- nearly a dollar more. Parchment paper from an office supply store in our area priced for $9.29. But in an inspection, it scanned for $13.29. That's $4 higher. "That's why we should all pay attention to what we pay," said Gary Stiens, a Missouri Weights and Measures inspector. Stiens goes through metro stores and checks product prices. He makes sure that what rings up at the register matches the shelf price for the product. "It was just in the wrong spot. Sometimes you have to watch for that. Somebody just put it there," Stiens said. Mistakes can happen to shoppers.
