Robert lrwin: Dotting the i's & Crossing the t's: Part II is the second part of an exhibition focusing on the oeuvre of Robert Irwin at The Pace Gallery in New York City. Robert Irwin is recognized as one of the major representatives of the Light and Space movement together with James Turrell, Larry Bell, and others. Irwin began his career as a painter in the 1950s. In the 1970s he turned to installation art, moving away from art as an object to art as an experience based on light and space. His work explores the themes condition, experience, perception, and light. This September, Robert Irwin will celebrate his 85th birthday. Robert lrwin: Dotting the i's & Crossing the t's: Part II at The Pace Gallery is a two-venue exhibition that takes place at the gallery's 57th Street and 25th Street venues. This video documents the opening reception at 510 west 25th Street. Here, the gallery presents Robert Irwin's iconic acrylic columns. The columns are the last works that Irwin conceived before he abandoned his studio practice. The three columns stretch more than fifteen feet towards the skylights of the gallery. Irwin conceived the work in 1969, but only today new materials and technology have enabled to realize the works as originally planned: without joints, as one unit. Robert Irwin was born in 1928 in Long Beach, California. Since 1975, he has conceived more than 55 site-specific projects. The artist lives and works in San Diego. He has been presented by The Pace Gallery since 1966. Robert lrwin: Dotting the i's & Crossing the t's: Part II / The Pace Gallery, 510 West 25th Street, New York City.
