New Casino Groundbreaking

A new casino is on its way to Cherokee County and along with it, hundreds of jobs.The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians broke ground Tuesday on the $110,000,000 casino. It will be built just outside of Murphy and called Harrahs Cherokee Valley River.The tribe says it will generate up to $39,000,000 in wages for the surrounding area. The average wage is going to be north of $35,000, says Chief Michell Hicks.It will be similar to Harrahs on the Cherokee reservation, but smaller, and operated by Caesars Entertainment. We have the potential to hire up to a thousand employees. We have the potential to work with all counties in Western North Carolina, says Harrahs Cherokee General Manager Brooks Robinson.The casino will include 60,000 square feet of slots and table games, a 300-room hotel, and restaurants.State Senator Jim Davis knows this casino will economically help this part of his district. He also reiterates the a message from Chief Hicks. As the Chief said, it goes to buy a lot of revenue, the source of funds to keep the Cherokee tradition and the culture alive.Construction begins next month, with parts of the new casino expected to open a year from now.
