Some scenes I shot at 240fps (interlaced) with my Sony HDR-XR500V HD camcorder. I filmed lots of scenes on a snowy day, both during the day and at night and also some water splashes and dripping water in a dark environment. Hopefully this'll help anyone who's looking to buy an HD camcorder for under $1000 and is interested in slow motion capabilities.

After months of research, this was the best HD camcorder I could find with manual focus and a hard drive for less than $1000. ($860 from B&H Photo and Video) It does 60 fps up to 1920x1080 or 240 fps at 720x480. It has a manual focus dial which you can also use to manually adjust the exposure (great for filming the moon or making proper movies) and other things without having to go through the menus. It comes with a 120 GB hard drive which can hold about 16 hours of video using the highest settings (16mbps) or much more using lower settings. The lens is very good and it does really nice macro videos - you can clearly film something from less than 1 cm away from the lens. (I'll make some macro videos of insects during the spring/summer) It also does very well in low light conditions without much noise and it even has a low lux mode (1/30 shutter speed) and a night vision mode with a night vision light. (Think Paranormal Activity) Other features include 5.1 surround sound recording, 12x zoom, color viewfinder, Image Stabilization, ability to take 12 MP pictures, face/smile detection, HDMI out, mic input, etc.

This camera usually records at 1920x1080i, but when it's set to slow motion it records at 240 fps interlaced, (so 120 fps progressive), so you can get a smooth video and see things 4 times slower than normal. The only down side is in slow motion, the resolution is really 720x480, even though it can save the video at 1920x1080.

The video was up-scaled to 1280x720 and encoded from .MTS to XViD to Uncompressed then to H.264 before being re-encoded by Youtube, so you shouldn't judge the quality of the original video based on this.

The song I used is Modest Mouse - Little Motel.
