Pompeo: US to suspend landmark nuclear pact

(4 Dec 2018) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced at a NATO meeting in Brussels Tuesday that Washington would suspend its obligations under the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty in 60 days due to Russia's alleged "cheating." Pompeo added that other countries like China, North Korea and Iran were not parties to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty and that "leaves them free to build all of the intermediate range missiles that they would like." NATO allies said they concluded that Russia was in violation of a landmark Cold War-era nuclear treaty, paving the way for the United States to leave the pact unless Moscow complies with it. The Russian Foreign Ministry denied US and NATO allegations that it was violating a landmark nuclear treaty that banned an entire class of weapons.
