DAYTON -- Police worked overview to ensure fans and roads were safe Tuesday during the first round of First Four games at the UD Arena. The first game at UD Arena drew a decent crowd, but the lot filled to capacity as Xavier University and NC State prepared to hit the court. Not bad at all. Smooth drive, Xavier sophomore Michael Lynch said about the traffic on his drive up from Cincinnati. That smooth drive was made possible by the increased presence of Dayton police. DPD used overtime crews to direct traffic along Edwin C Moses Blvd. and Stewart Street, patrol the parking lot and neighboring streets.Even officers not in the UD detail are clear that this is an all-hands-on-deck scenario.Everyone on the street is aware of people coming into the city and were here to support them in any way they need, Dayton Police Sgt. John Riegel explained Tuesday.U.S. Marshals used K-9s to sniff cars parked in the lot for bombs and other explosives.Security inside the venue was controlled by UD, and Dayton police say they are pros in their fourth year of hosting the high-profile event. The university has it down pretty well. They get people in and out and there are very few incidents in the arena. It's a pretty safe venue, we have very few complaints, Riegel added. The team effort between Dayton police and the University of Dayton will continue on Wednesday with the same formula for the final two games.
