After a close friend of his was arrested for a crime he had not committed, Radile Mokone decided to take the bull by the horns to fix what he saw as a gross injustice. With neither a legal qualification nor experience, he represented his friend in court and duly won. This victory triggered a strong desire in him to inspire other young people in his community to participate more actively in creating the future that they want to see. His starting point was to take the National Development Plan—the closest thing to a comprehensive vision statement that the South African government has—and present it in a form that is more accessible, more meaningful, and certainly more inspiring. In this opening presentation of TEDxJohannesburg 2015, he performs his ‘Vision Statement’ together with trumpeter Nyameko Nkondlwane and graffiti artist Drgreenmo Thabang. An activist and a storyteller, Radile Mokone is co-founder of Artrest, a gallery and restaurant in Sharpeville that gives the youth a platform to engage local and broader communities. In pursuit of that goal, Artrest have crafted a performance piece titled Vision Statement; instead of waiting for the powers that be to articulate their vision for South Africa, Radile and his team have taken a bottom-up approach and have done that for them. At TEDxJohannesburg 2015, Radile presents Artrest’s grand vision for the South Africa they want to live in, circa 2030. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
