This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. See and hear how Julie Bevilacqua created a poem as an expression of science. As a junior at Merion Mercy Academy, Julie serves as assistant editor for her school literary magazine. She also serves as a member of the Ministry Team and the Mock Trial/Moot Court team. An aspiring doctor, Julie attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this past summer, as well as the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership seminar. Julie's other interests include reading, poetry, and writing in general. She recently competed in the University of the Arts Poetry Slam for high school students, placing second out of the juniors. Julie was also the recipient of the Annenberg/Philadelphia Inquirer Journalism Award, for which she wrote an article explaining a topic of scientific research. Julie also serves as a leader for her school's Community Service Corps, for which she helped to organize this year's fair trade sale. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
