(21 Oct 2018) About 2,000 Central American migrants who avoided Mexican police at a border bridge and swam and floated across the river from Guatemala decided on Saturday to re-form their mass caravan and continue their trek northward toward the United States.
"Of course, in the name of Jesus it will re-form," Erasmo Duarte who had been travelling for six days told the Associated Press.
Gathered at a park in the border city of Ciudad Hidalgo, migrants voted by a show of hands and then marched to the border bridge to urge those still stranded there to cross the river and join them.
The move capped a day in which Mexican authorities again refused mass entry over the bridge, instead accepting small groups for asylum processing and granting 45-day visitor permits to some.
Authorities handed out numbers for people to be processed in a strategy seen before at U.S. border posts when dealing with large numbers of migrants.
But many migrants have become impatient. They avoided the border gate and swarmed across the river on rafts, swimming or wading in full view of the hundreds of Mexican police manning the blockade on the bridge.
Some paid locals the equivalent of $1.25 to ferry them across the muddy waters. They were not detained on reaching the Mexican bank.
The stretch of border between Guatemala and Mexico is notoriously porous.
