Tens of thousands of mourners surrounded the Kaaba in Mecca (pictured), Saudi Arabia, to pay tribute to Jamal Khashoggi (inset), who was their countryman and a vocal critic of the Islamist autocracy that governs the state. Muslims prayed at the Grand Mosque today to commemorate the dissident, who was strangled to death according to Turkish officials. The journalist was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Islamic kingdom has blamed 'rogue elements' who acted beyond their brief and claims to be putting in measures to ensure such a thing never happens again. But Turkey says that responsibility for the murder lies at the 'highest levels' of the Saudi government as Turkish media claims audio proves the killing was pre-meditated.
