www.cranfield.ac.uk/sas/s4ge Chaired by Professor Simon Pollard, Cranfield University and Julie Vaughan, Senior Associate, Herbert Smith Freehills LLP. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies offer a feasible solution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and reducing the impact of climate change, for countries where the continued use of these fuels is necessary to meet electricity demands. UK Government is working with industry to create a new cost-competitive CCS industry in the 2020s, through incentives for research and development and electricity market reforms. However, there remain significant challenges in implementing CCS effectively. This seminar discussed the status of CCS technologies and their importance in meeting the UK's ambitious CO2 reduction targets. Expert speakers outlined current technology developments and the associated commercial opportunities and risks. Areas of discussion: Cranfield University speakers: Introduction to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) - Professor Simon Pollard The energy scene and the role for CCS - Professor John Oakley CO2 capture, transport, use and storage technologies - Dr Ben Anthony Herbert Smith Freehills LLP speakers: Current and future regulations and related issues - Julia Pyke Commercial issues and liabilities - Simon Tysoe Q&A Session - Julie Vaughan
