http://www.pamsdogacademy.com Twix is still learning the weaves... He is doing wonderful. I am doing this weave pole challenge that my friend Kathy "bordergirlsmom" has posted on her blog and youtube channel. I figure it will get me practicing the weaves... I am a little confused on the numbering of the positions and who really invented this drill. I thought it was a Susan Garrett drill from her 2x2 video, but I also saw it in an article by Rachel Sanders. I think that the numbers of the arc are even on the left and odd on the right. So, it would be 0 in the middle then 1, 3, 5, 7 on the right and 2, 4, 6, 8 on the left when you are standing facing the weaves. Not that the numbers make that much difference. Really it is all about changing the weave entry and making it more challenging in addition to proofing the weaves. You do not want to always have to support your dog to make sure they get into the weaves properly. You want the dog to find the entry no matter where he is. Practice running with your dog from both sides, rear crosses from both sides, sending your dog from both sides and leading out from both sides. Try squeaking a ball as you run or putting toys on the ground to proof the dog. The dog's job is to do the weaves completely with out popping out. Never get upset if your dog is not getting it. Go back to an easier step if you need to, especially if your dog keeps failing. Change environments to proof teh weaves as well. This is a different field than Twix is used to working on. So, at first he struggled with his entry. I went back to an easier step and after a few successes he was ready to move to something harder. Take your time and just have fun training your dog! There is no hurry! The main thing is to continue building that positive relationship with your dog! Have a great day with your dog! Pam, Isabelle, Bandit & Twix
