The Hunefeld - Dunham family explored antiquities in Sicily Italy for ten days in March 2011. Sicilia (Sicily) was colonized by Greeks in the 8th century BC - the ruins rival those in Greece. We spent our first two night in the little fishing town of Scopello, visiting the temple and theater of Segesta. Then a night in the clouds in the ancient walled mountaintop city of Erice (Hotel La Pineta!). From there we drove to the south side of the island where we based ourselves for four days at a little family inn (Verdetecnica -- in the family for 5 generations) in the thousand year old fishing town of Sciacca on the south coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. From Sciacca we made day trips to the Greek and Roman temple ruins of Selinunte and found our way to its ancient quarry (Cave di Cusa) where we explored temple columns abandoned 2500 years ago as they were being carved from granite. We trekked along winding roads into the mountain town of Caltabellotta and Sant' Anna. The next day we followed the coast east to the extensive Greek ruins at Agrigento. Then back north through the mountains to spend the last 2 nights at a B&B in the mountains just south of Monreale/Palermo - Casale del Principe - were we had some of the best evening meals imaginable. From Casale we hiked in the mountains, visited the spectacular cathedrals (dumos) of both Palermo and Monreale, visited the Palermo Archeological Museum and the gruesome Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (Catacombe dei Cappucccini) containing thousands of mummified bodies. We also searched in the rain for the very remote 2500 year-old ruins of Scavi del Monte Jato only to find them closed. * * Verdetecnica: www.verdetecnica.it * * Erice hotel: http://www.lapinetadierice.com/ * * Our first several nights in Italy (Naples) and Erice are on another YouTube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjrbxbVupS4 or http://youtu.be/mjrbxbVupS4
