The hydrothermal field of Dallol in the northern Danakil desert of Ethiopia is one of the world's strangest places. Intense hydrothermal activity driven by the heat of magma at shallow depth beneath the crust and the presence of abundant salt create an explosion of colors and strange formations of lakes, salt structures, fumaroles. One particularly interesting part is the so-called "Yellow Lake" shown here during our expedition, with its water being intensely colored in yellow due to exotic organic compounds formed in this special environment. Video was taken during our "Desert, Salt and Volcanoes" expedition in Ethiopia in Dec 2014-Jan2015: https://www.volcanoadventures.com/ethiopia/erta_ale_danakil/expedition.html Video copyright: Tobias Schorr / VolcanoDiscovery
