Faced with crippling drought in 1997, the small country town of Goomeri was devastated. The locals needed to find a way to recover and bring the community together. A celebration of the humble pumpkin began with a festival designed to bring people and money into the town's flagging economy and to extend their country hospitality to all the visitors. It worked, and now the annual Goomeri Pumpkin Festival attracts visitors from all over Australia and beyond. The fun part of this festival is the weird and wonderful pumpkin events, from Pumpkin Bowls, Decorated Pumpkins, Giant Pumpkin competition, Pumpkin Pull, Pumpkin Pageant and the Pumpkin Power Shot Put. But the highlight of the weekend is the Great Australian Pumpkin Roll where the crowds roll their pumpkins down Policeman's Hill towards the local police station. Pumpkins are even given right of way as Goomeri's traffic stops during the festival in which the town's population swells from 450 to 14,000 for the day.
