Japan develops novel method to predict sudden downpours

The Japan Meteorological Research Institute has developed a new method for predicting sudden regional downpours. The institute found that before downpours large amounts of bugs and small petals are caught in an updraft caused during the formation of cumulonimbus cloud. Using a weather radar that can distinguish between bugs and water droplets, a warning can be issued before a localized heavy downpour occurs. Last summer the method was used to successfully predict the appearance of cumulonimbus cloud 2.5hrs before its formation.
