Today’s lesson is the beginner’s guide to modulations. I will explain what modulations are, how to spot them, and how to play them on piano. I will review two of the most common modulations; common chord which use pivot chords and common note modulations. A modulation is a fancy term for when you change keys during a piece. It is very common for pieces to modulate to the dominant, or chromatic third of the tonic of the key you are in. It takes time to understand modulations but over time, you will find it becomes easy.
