How do you offer bipolar help to a family member or loved one? It’s a question I get quite often because many family members and friends do want to help, but when they try, they get rebuffed; which leads to feelings of anger, frustration and not being appreciated.

When someone close to you lives with bipolar disorder, it's difficult to know how to offer help. In this video, I share some ways to provide support and help to someone with bipolar disorder based off my experience of living with bipolar 2.

Getting involved in the mental health community whether online or locally is the best way to offer bipolar help. Local events that support mental health happen all over the country. The internet provides many blogs and articles by people living with bipolar disorder. Social media accounts of mental health advocates are very present on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as well. Share these types of resources with your friend or family member living with bipolar.

Another great way to offer help to someone living with bipolar disorder is by encouraging them to seek therapy and treatment. The more you support it, the less shame they will feel shame about receiving it. One proviso here, encouraging treatment is not the same as ordering someone to get treatment. Also, coping skills such as journaling can help both you and the person living with bipolar disorder. Research “journal prompts” that you can work on together. Offering bipolar disorder help is not that difficult once you know what to do.

As someone living with bipolar disorder, what would you suggest as ways to offer help? Or, if you’re a family member or significant other, share what’s worked for you in offering bipolar help. Please share your thoughts below in the comment section or do a response video and send it into [email protected]. See you next week! Hannah
