The sun recently unleashed the strongest solar flare of the year, which knocked out radio communications for a short period of time. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observator recorded video of the event, available here on Space.com :

The solar flare occurred at 3:16 a.m. EDT on April 11. We're nearing the end of the sun's 11 year cycle, signalling a "spring fling" for the sun. This could mean more, possibly stronger, solar flares. It's difficult to predict solar flares, but thanks to magnetic loops inside the sun, scientists are able to predict solar flares 2-3 days before they happen.
