(11 Oct 2018) BRITISH DESIGNERS HENRY HOLLAND AND CHRISTOPHER KANE ON THEIR FIRST CREATIONS: SLOGANS, COLORING IN, NUDES British designers Henry Holland and Christopher Kane both started out in the fashion industry at a young age, sketching, coloring in and writing slogans. Scottish designer Kane graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2006, and started his namesake label in the same year with his sister, Tammy. But he started out sketching and coloring in with his Auntie Sandra in the working class former steel town of Motherwell, between Glasgow and Edinburgh. "I remember coloring in - my Auntie Sandra drew a sweetheart shape, strangely enough, which is very similar to the sweetheart shape and coloring in and it was a very strange drawing, but it looked good," said the 36-year-old designer. "I did get told off for drawing a lot of nude people in primary school but I used to put clothes on them afterwards, but they never got to that part," smiled the award-winning designer. Henry Holland started out in journalism at the acclaimed London College of Communication in south London, but moved into T-shirt design. His first design was a T-shirt with a catchphrase on it. "Yeah, it was my slogan T-shirt because I was, like, I started off in journalism and then I moved into fashion and so my first couple of collections was literally just still writing, but just writing on clothes and then I gradually started making clothes." Back in 2006, the English designer's T-shirts were worn by fellow industry professional Gareth Pugh, who sported one backstage at his fashion show reading "Ger Yer Freak On Giles Deacon." Designer Giles Deacon, on the other hand, wore one reading "Uhu Gareth Pugh." Holland went on to form his own label, House of Holland, in 2008, and became well-known for his work with his friend, the model Agyness Deyn. 35-year-old Holland's shows are a popular fixture at London Fashion Week.
