Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection as a process over a period of time is one of the greatest ideas to come out of the human mind. 
But what we observer in the diversity of life does not seem to be based just on the survival of the fittest there seems to be a self created beauty for its own sake! Could a deeper understanding of Time and the reason why we have a future and a past explain this? Our deepest understanding of Time is explained in Einstein's theories of relativity. In these theories Time is more than just a measure of change of things happening because we have the geometry of Einstein's curvature of spacetime.

This video explains a theory that the wave-particle duality of light is linked to the reason why we have a future and a past forming an Arrow of Time. 
Each observer collapses the light waves giving each new photon particle a position in space and time that never existed before the collapse. In this way the future unfolds as a process of continuous creation. 
Therefore we have a Universe of continuous creation or change where the possible can become the actual. 
It is because life can choose when and where to collapse the wave function breaking the symmetry that we have freewill. Life will create its own ripples in the fabric of spacetime forming its own broken symmetry of its own evolutionary path.
This forms an infinity of possibilities within the evolutionary process for each species and infinity of choice!
