Teal Power Shootout: Oak Hills High School raising awareness for ovarian cancer

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - It's a big weekend for cancer awareness in the Tri-State.

Oak Hills High School is getting ready for the “Teal Power Shootout.” Dozens of students are getting involved in a whole new way this year.

This is the fifth year for Teal Power Shootout. It's a basketball tournament that runs the next two weekends. Teal is the color for fighting ovarian cancer and this year's basketball tournament showing courage, caring and hope in a whole new way.

This year the boys at Oak Hills kick off the Teal Power Shootout on Friday night.

It's all an effort to show support.

“Show support, raise awareness, obviously raise some money for research and funding for ovarian cancer,” said Ben Zahneis.

Andy Walter is part of the team from the Ovarian Cancer Alliance that started the tournament. His wife Debbie lost her battle with this cancer last year.

“This is kind of a great event because Debbie and I met here at Oak Hills, we were high school sweethearts,” said Andy.

For the girls, who compete Saturday, it’s also a chance to give.

“I love it, it's probably my favorite game of the year,” said Baylie Wieck, an Oak Hills student.

And at halftime, there will be a chance for hair donations to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program.

All the hair is donated to make wigs for women who are in chemo and can't afford wigs.

There's also some recent information about the cancer that is startling the teens.

“Just in our local area we have had a 10-year-old a 16-year-old diagnosed and an 18-year-old diagnosed,” said Andy Walter.

So, here's how this works, you can attend the games at Oak Hills this weekend, at Xavier and other places next weekend.

You can also just show up and donate hair at halftime at the game on Saturday.

The Ovarian Cancer Alliance also offers information on early warning signs, as well as support for families. You can get information on these at the shootout and games.
