Sarah McShane's college experience has culminated in a self-proclaimed year of birth and death, in which she juxtaposed becoming a doula, a nonmedical supporter for women in labor, at UNC hospitals with the loss of her father to terminal cancer. While seemingly opposed, she has found birth and death have remarkable similarities and issues -- issues we have trouble talking about.

Sarah McShane is a senior biology and chemistry major from Northern Virginia. She has found many passions in her undergraduate career, including teaching, biology research, competitive running, and serving others.
